The formulae used
These are the standard published conversions, shown so you can check the arithmetic yourself.
- IFCC (mmol/mol) = (DCCT % − 2.15) × 10.929
- eAG (mg/dL) = (28.7 × DCCT %) − 46.7
- mmol/L = mg/dL ÷ 18.0
The estimated average glucose equation is from the ADAG study (Nathan et al., Diabetes Care, 2008). The DCCT–IFCC conversion is the IFCC master equation.
What this cannot tell you
Estimated average glucose is an average. Two people with the same HbA1c can have very different glucose patterns — one steady, one swinging between highs and lows. HbA1c is also unreliable in anaemia, haemoglobinopathies, pregnancy, recent transfusion and chronic kidney disease. Discuss your result with your clinician rather than acting on it alone.
