HbA1c Test: Normal Range, Targets & What It Means

One blood test shows your average sugar over the past three months. Here's how to read your result.

In short

  • HbA1c reflects your average blood sugar over the past 2–3 months.
  • Below 5.7% is normal; 5.7–6.4% is prediabetes; 6.5% or higher indicates diabetes.
  • For most adults with diabetes, the target is below 7%.
  • Anaemia and thalassaemia trait can make the result falsely high or low.
  • Retest every 3 months if not at target, every 6 months once stable.

HbA1c reflects your average blood sugar over the past 2–3 months.
